Partnered with Alger Conservation District
The Michigan On-Farm Produce Safety program is a collaborative effort among MI Department of Ag and Rural Development (MDARD), Michigan State University Extension, and Michigan Conservation Districts to provide comprehensive farmer education, training, technical assistance, and regulatory support to ensure compliance with federal food safety regulations. When working with a Conservation District Produce Safety Technician, you can be sure that your information and services will be free, confidential, and never shared with regulators. Produce Safety Technicians are ready to help you meet your on-farm produce safety goals!
The Produce Safety Risk Assessment (PSRA) is a voluntary program designed to educate fresh fruit and vegetable producers about food safety and recognize those implementing produce safety management practices. Producers who successfully complete the assessment are eligible to receive a Michigan Produce Safety Certificate that they can share with their consumers and buyers.
On-Farm Readiness Reviews are designed to help fresh produce growers feel prepared and ready for the full implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). They allow growers to walk through their operation with a small team of food-safety experts and discuss how to meet the new FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirements.
It’s a farmer’s choice! Get started with a technician, whether you have detailed produce safety practices or not. A visit from a technician may or may not include a risk assessment at first – you and the technician work out the best plan together!

No, Produce Safety Technicians will never share information about your farm or farm practices with a regulatory body. Technicians will work with you to identify food safety risks and provide technical assistance to help you reduce and manage those risks to ensure safe produce for all consumers.
If you are a farm that does any: growing, harvesting, packing, or holding, of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, or mushrooms, produce safety applies to you! The Produce Safety Rule provides federal requirements for these practices, and a Produce Safety Technician can help you ensure you are meeting these standards.
No, you are not obligated to earn a Produce Safety Certificate. You may choose to work with a Produce Safety Technician as much or as little as you prefer; all services provided are always voluntary, as well as free and confidential. Choosing to work with a Produce Safety Technician, however, may result in your farm being better aligned with the Produce Safety Rule and more prepared for a regulatory inspection.
