At Alger Conservation District, we specialize in providing a wide range of community services, including grants. Our team coordinates with state and federal grant programs to identify, plan, and take appropriate action to safeguard Alger County’s natural resources on public and privately held lands.
Our community supports our mission, ensuring a clean, healthy, and vibrant native ecosystem for generations.

Due to the success of this project, an additional round has been approved. AuTrain Lake landowners have supported the project, creating a widespread positive outcome for the lake and our community.
Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) has now been identified in 6 lower peninsula counties. Alger Conservation, in partnership with Picture Rocks National Lakeshore Park and private landowners, have identified several dozen sites to survey in prevention of HWA spread.
Alger Conservation District works with private landowners that border public land to restore habitat for the whitetail deer population. The project includes tree cover planting, fruit tree planting, and deer food plots. This program is commonly referred to as DHIPI.
Alger Conservation District continues to focus on removing invasive species such as spotted knapweed and Eurasian Swamp Thistle.
Alger Conservation District was awarded a continuation of treatment for the sensitive dune complexes at Coast Guard Point in Grand Marais, MI. Our partners and team will be treating invasives, Baby's Breath and Spotted Knapweed, this summer to limit the spread and allow the native species, such as the pitcher's thistle, an opportunity to thrive.

Alger Conservation District uses funds provided by the grants based on the grant awarded. Each grant has its own funding requirements and disbursement schedule. A typical grant used throughout Alger County is the Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative (DHIPI grant). This grant is leveraged on private land that borders public access lands to improve deer habitat in Alger County.
