Sara, born and raised in the UP, is excited to be serving the landowners of Alger and Marquette counties! The Forestry Assistance Program (FAP) is a grant-funded program through the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) to help family forest owners achieve their goals for woodland ownership. Over half of the forestland in Michigan is privately owned, and 20% of that is not being actively managed (Michigan State University survey). The Forestry Assistance Program strives to educate and empower landowners to be active stewards of their forests by offering free technical assistance. This can include one-on-one site visits, referrals to public and private sector professionals, assistance navigating property enrollment programs, outreach events, and many other resources.
A forest management plan is a document that takes an inventory of your forest property and helps lay out a landowner's goals and objectives along with a plan to execute any activities that might help achieve these goals. A forest management plan is also a requirement for many programs. For more information about if getting a forest management plan is right for you and regarding current available cost-share,
The Qualified Forest Program benefits include receiving a maximum 18 mill reduction of school property taxes, public access to land is not a requirement, and contributing to regional economies by practicing sustainable timber harvesting! For more information about eligibility requirements, reach out to Sara or go to:
This voluntary forestland certification system provides landowners (owning between 10 and 10,000 acres) with a way to examine and improve their current forest management practices. Certifying a forest in ATFS ensures playing a positive role in the protection and sustainable management of our natural resources. Any wood products extracted from an ATFS property is considered certified sustainable wood. For more information, reach out to Sara or visit the link below.
Want to receive financial assistance to make some forestry and wildlife improvements on your land? The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) has cost-share funding that could be a good fit for you.
The MAEAP Forest, Wetland, and Habitat*A*Syst program verifies that the landowner's current management practices are minimizing negative impacts to the land and water. For more information, Contact Sara or

Congratulations! Reach out to Sara to set up a FREE site visit to your property to discuss your goals for your land and receive technical assistance regarding how to achieve them. She can refer you to various financial assistance programs, public and private sector professionals, and can help you gain a deeper understanding and connection to your land.
Here in Michigan, we have two forest property tax programs: the Qualified Forest Program and the Commercial Forest Program. They each have different requirements for enrollment, but both require you to actively manage your timber and to not have the property listed as your principal residence. Contact Sara to find out if your property fits the eligibility requirements for a tax program.
Great question. There are a lot of factors that can cause a tree to be stressed (and sometimes it's out of our control!) If Sara is available, she can come out to look at your tree, or you can always send her photos. Keep in mind that Sara is not authorized to make safety determinations, and may refer you to an arborist.
Every species has different preferences, but planting trees and shrubs that will provide food and cover is often a good place to start! Check out the Alger Conservation District Tree Sale for some native species that can attract wildlife.
Connecting landowners with professionals in the forest products industry is a priority for the Forestry Assistance Program. If you would like to be on the email list to receive notification of forestry projects, please email our forester, Sara Kelso, at sara.kelso@macd.org
Contact Sara with the referral number of the project you're interested in.
She will add your contact information to a list provided to the landowner.
