Chatham Community Gardens

the place for community, education, learning, and partnerships

Chatham Community Garden was built upon a donated parcel of land. This land, with help from the community, has been developed to serve the people of Alger County. In the past two of years ACD and our partners have completed:

  • barrier fencing
  • three raised garden beds
  • 250' of native wildflowers for pollinator habitat
  • installed butterfly houses
  • acquired donations for lumber and watering systems
  • partnered with local beekeepers to install honeybee habitat and hive
  • planted over 100 trees on-site

All Alger County residents are welcome at the gardens. We ask that you practice leave-no-trace while enjoying this community space. Come by and enjoy a walk along the pollinator bed up to the honeybee hive, or work the soil in the garden beds.

Master Gardener Series is back!

Olivia Kingery, in partnership with Alger Conservation District and the National Association of Conservation District's Urban and Community grant, is proud to be back at the gardens this year to expand local resources for county residents. Olivia has volunteered to host a monthly workshop from April to October 2025 to help the community learn, grow, and make the most of their at home gardens!

    About Olivia Kingery

Olivia Kingery is a farmer and writer living in Chatham on a homestead with her husband, five dogs, three cats, flock of laying hens, and small herd of sheep and goats. She has an MFA in environmental creative writing from Northern Michigan University, her bachelor’s from Northern, and has lived in the UP for 11 years now.

She owns and operates Pileated Farms, a market and CSA farm, established in 2021. The farm produces vegetables, as well as seasonal fruit and fresh eggs. Her favorite time of the year is foraging for wild leeks in late Spring. She is a certified MSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer, and working with the Chatham Community Gardens is her first project as part of the program. Her hope is to work to create a space that can offer individual garden plots for folks to rent for the season, as well as producing food that goes to local food banks and school programs.

Her favorite fruit is strawberries straight from the vine, her favorite vegetable is anything in the brassica family, and her favorite food is homegrown crispy chicken with freshly harvested potatoes and local corn.

You can email her at oliviamkingery@gmail.com with any questions or comments, or stop by the Chatham Community Garden and chat over some gardening.
